KGLO Radio: A new program in a Central Iowa prison aims to help fill the state’s skilled labor shortage and bring quality, affordable homes to rural areas, while also helping keep offenders from returning to prison. Inmates will build three-bedroom houses in Newton to be shipped to communities that need affordable housing. Newton’s acting warden Jeremy Larson says inmates in the home building program can get formal training to become carpenters, electricians, plumbers and general laborers.
