A building that for more than 28 years housed the Italian-American Cultural Center of Iowa has been sold.

Robert and Christie Boesen had acquired the building at 1961 Indianola Ave. when they sold the historic Butler Mansion to the Italian-American group in late December.

The couple sold the one-story building with a mural depicting well-known local Italian-Americans and historic Italian buildings and sculptures to Optimae Lifeservices Inc. for $555,000, Polk County real estate records show. The transaction was recorded April 7. Optimae provides health care and human services for people with disabilities and mental illness.

The 15,939-square-foot building was constructed in 1925. It sits on 1.1 acres. The property is valued at $705,000.

The Italian-American Cultural Center is buying the Butler Mansion at 2633 Fleur Drive on contract for $3.3 million. Paolo Bartesaghi, president of the group, has said it had outgrown the Indianola Avenue building. The Butler Mansion will allow the organization to expand its event offerings, Bartesaghi has said. Plans include offering an interactive museum, research library, event center, culinary classes, language and art classes, and a garden.
