Kreg Tool of Huxley is part of a 3-D printing wave in Iowa that is saving manufacturers money. Iowa State University’s Center for Industrial Research and Service (CIRAS) worked with the company to come up with a mold insert made with a 3-D metal printer. People who really know this stuff call this “additive manufacturing.” They tinkered with the design for about a year. The final version allows the company to better control temperatures and to save several steps in the manufacturing process. So the products come off the line more quickly, and, oh yeah, Kreg is saving $20,000 a year.
