I had the opportunity to emcee the Greater Des Moines Habitat for Humanity Key Awards on Sept. 29, where I learned something interesting about one of the honorees. Kemin Industries was honored with the Corporate Key Award for its long-standing financial and volunteer support of Habitat since 2009. Kemin President and CEO Chris Nelson accepted the award and shared that later this year the company will be sending 40 Kemin employees to Nepal —  one of a handful of international Kemin locations — to help build homes for those affected by the devastating earthquake that hit the region in 2015, killing 9,000 people and injuring nearly 22,000. Closer to home, while talking with Knapp Properties CEO Gerry Neugent and Nelson prior to the event, Nelson said Kemin is getting closer to completion on its new $30 million headquarters along the Southeast Connector. The project is scheduled for a 2017 completion, and will get all the company’s corporate employees who are scattered throughout the metro under one roof. If you haven’t yet, take a drive down the still relatively new Southeast Connector (Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway). There’s a lot of open ground for development.
