NOTEBOOK – One Good Read: California’s example of the ill effects of growth

California’s median household income has grown about 17% since 2011, compared with about 10% nationally, adjusted for inflation, the New York Times reported. The state has a thriving $3 trillion economy with record low unemployment. But growth has caused other problems: mass homelessness, three-hour commutes, pollution, etc. It’s a reminder that as metropolitan areas grow, we can’t leave people or quality of life behind. In Greater Des Moines, we also see a need to address some of these issues, although we’re thankful to have commuter time that most metros dream of. In fact, some of these areas are topics in our 2020 Business Record Power Breakfast series. In May our topic is “Designing Des Moines for the Future,” and in September our topic is “Addressing Economic Inequality.”
