Juneteenth is too important a day for one good read. Here are three pieces to take a look at.

  • What to know about Juneteenth, the emancipation holiday (NBC News): “Juneteenth has always been particularly special for African Americans,” said Julian Hayter, a historian and an associate professor at the University of Richmond in Virginia. “It’s this critical inflection point in the black freedom struggle.”
  • The Pulitzer Prize-winning 1619 Project published by the New York Times last year aims to reframe the country’s history by placing the consequences of slavery and the contributions of black Americans at the very center of our national narrative.
  • What Juneteenth means to me: Black leaders explain (USA Today): “What does it mean when your community’s freedom is a legislative act? What does it mean when your community has been under attack for 400 years? What does freedom actually mean? Juneteenth is a historically powerful day because it lends itself to a deeper conversation about freedom.”
