Across the country, the number of first-year Black students in medical schools is up 21%, I read in a piece from GBH News. Representation among physicians is important, experts say, because statistics show it leads to better health outcomes. The story featured leaders at Tufts Medical School, who have taken a hard look at their history and have publicly committed to being anti-racist, which they believe is part of the reason they’ve seen higher enrollment from students of color. But the school acknowledged changes are still needed, like offering more scholarships based on need and not just merit.
