More and more millennials are being creative about homeownership, with more unmarried millennials pooling their resources to turn what may otherwise seem like a fantasy into an achievable goal. With more millennials getting married later in life, combined with student debt and soaring home prices, millennials are increasingly turning to friends or roommates to make homeownership a reality. In this Wall Street Journal article, we learn that millennials have become the largest share of home buyers in the U.S., and that the number of co-buyers with different last names jumped 771% between 2014 and 2021. Last year, 11% of buyers were unmarried couples, while 3% were listed as “other,” or essentially roommates. Those numbers were up from 9% and 2% respectively the previous year.
