In this story, Business Insider explores the report, which found that while 60% of jobs that pay a living wage required a bachelor’s degree, only 25% of those jobs involved skills a candidate would develop in college. The results could have significant implications for how employers screen candidates, said Chris Bierly, a senior partner at Bain and a co-author of the study. “If we can do a better job — both educators and employers — of shaping educational pathways to good jobs that are efficient and effective, it has huge implications for society,” Bierly said. Data from the National Center for Education Statistics shows that college graduation rates for Black and Hispanic adults are far below their white counterparts, leaving many underrepresented groups out of the running for a job. And with college enrollment dropping by 6.8% in 2020, that pool is shrinking even further.
