NOTEBOOK – ONE GOOD READ: The jig is up: Many of you are cheating at Wordle

CHEAT. A five-letter word I have yet to encounter while playing the popular online word game Wordle. Yes, I’m a regular player of the game, and from what I see on my social media feeds, a lot of you are, too. And according to this story from CNBC earlier this month, many of you may also be cheating. I’ll take the Fifth as to whether I’m among those who have sought help to avoid a failure that would end a winning streak, but a recent study by Wordfinderx, a website for word games like Wordle and Scrabble, which uses Google Trends data, has determined searches for the answer to the daily puzzle have tripled since January. The study found that searches for Feb. 15’s “AROMA” and Feb. 19’s “SWILL” reached 100 out of 100 on Google’s search popularity scale. According to the story, that is higher than “SIEGE” on Jan.  4, which only reached a 1 on the scale. Other searches for the daily Wordle answer never topped 60 before the New York Times bought the game on Jan. 31. That means that based on Google search trends, more people are seeking help on the internet to solve their Wordle puzzle. Now that the jig is up that more of you are seeking help, will your winning streak CRASH to a halt? I DOUBT it.
