In six major metro areas, including Chicago, Uber and Lyft accounted for 1% to 3% of vehicle miles. In San Francisco, it was as much as 13.4%. On average, between the six cities, as much as 62% of miles driven had a passenger. The rest were drivers on their way to pick up someone or just driving around between bookings. The companies noted that commercial vehicles are a big reason for traffic jams. There were renewed calls for congestion pricing such as Manhattan is pursuing.
