Sounds great. It turns out we should look for the details. The New York Times today offers an article saying some of Amazon’s workers fear their total compensation will fall. “Yes, Amazon is increasing wages, which will benefit most employees. But it will no longer give out new stock options and monthly bonuses,” it reads. Bernie Sanders, a critic of Amazon in the past and who cheered last week’s news, is asking about this, the story says. Wages are of interest locally as Iowa deals with low unemployment and young workers coming in with high levels of student loan debt or those who are on the fiscal cliff. It’s come up in a number of conversations I’ve had with workers and business leaders in the last year, including just last week as the Amazon news was coming out.
