Secretary of State Paul Pate has uncovered some evidence that the coming statewide elections could see higher voter turnout. The number of registered voters in Iowa this month hit a record for a December preceding an election year, Pate reported.

Just to reinforce our image as independent thinkers, the “no party” designation leads the way with 721,344 registrations.

The Republican Party was in second place at 653,032, ahead of the Democratic Party’s 604,493. In fourth place was the Libertarian Party at 9,606. The remaining 2,944 registrations were in other designations.

That’s 1,991,419 active registered voters in Iowa.
