I arrived to services at West Des Moines United Methodist Church Sunday fully pumped that the afternoon would bring a concert in our sanctuary featuring jazz great and Noce guru Max Wellman, and two other giants of Des Moines jazz, vocalist Tina Haase Findlay and bassist Steve Charlson. But the announcement came that Max had postponed the gig because his wife was expected to give birth that day. The couple welcomed Jack Fitzgerald Wellman, and Max reported to friends on Facebook that he and Katy Merriman are feeling blessed. No word yet, but we fully expect that when Jack goes home, he’ll burst into “Baby, It’s Cold Outside,” or maybe “I’ve Got My Love to Keep Me Warm.” Max rescheduled the gig for 4 p.m. this coming Sunday at the church, Eighth and Grand in West Des Moines. All it will cost you is “congratulations” to Wellman, and a free-will offering.
