Oakmoor racquetball club shutting down
Ron Burns is closing Oakmoor Racquetball and Health Center at 4731 Merle Hay Road. The center opened 35 years ago when racquetball was a booming sport with an estimated 14 million participants nationally. The center’s last day open will be Aug. 15 and its equipment will be sold at a Sept. 19 auction. “It was a fancy place,” Burns told DesMoinesRegister.com. In addition to 14 courts, it had a large swimming pool, a gym, a running track, weight machines, a restaurant, a barber-beauty shop, saunas and a nursery.
