Consumers are expected to spend an average of $196 to show their love this Valentine’s Day, which is up 8 percent from last year, according to the latest American Express Spending & Saving Tracker.

More than half of consumers said they’ll be buying Valentine’s Day gifts, with 29 percent buying flowers, 19 percent buying gift cards, 16 percent buying jewelry and 13 percent buying electronics. Additionally, 46 percent say they plan to visit their favorite restaurants to celebrate the holiday, up from 39 percent last year.

But for many Americans, today will be more than flowers and chocolates — four million people are expected to propose marriage or be proposed to.
