ONE GOOD READ: These retailers hope to hold on
I was surprised the other day to learn that Kohl’s is struggling. I have noticed, as I figured would happen, that the layers of discounts the retailer offered coming out of the last recession are here to stay. Of course, what is less obvious is how much prices were adjusted to make up for the “You saved $120” messages that seem common at checkouts when the discounts are added. Now, CNBC is reporting that six retailers could be in a do-or-die holiday season: J.C. Penney, Bed Bath & Beyond, Kohl’s, L Brands (Victoria’s Secret), Gap, and Barnes & Noble.
