According to officials with the Partnership, the self-assessment tool will help companies assess their work-based learning efforts and needs in three areas: work-based learning continuum diversification, education partnerships and support staff, and high-quality and accessible work-based learning experience for all students. According to the release, more than 310 Iowa school districts have at least one work-based learning program across various industries. Work-based learning creates opportunities for students to learn what types of jobs are available within the Des Moines community and help them gain professional and technical skills for a possible career. Those programs can help employers build a talent pipeline and create a more connected workforce through registered apprenticeships, internships, job shadowing and more. “The entire community benefits when local students are prepared and supported as they gain the skill sets and confidence needed to work in our region,” Lexi Shafer, director of workforce at the Partnership, said in the release. “This work-based learning tool will help close gaps and fulfill talent needs for Des Moines employers by identifying actionable steps for success.”
