Ryan Penning will become West Des Moines’ director of parks and recreation on April 1, filling the vacancy created by the retirement of the department’s current director.

Penning is now assistant director of parks and recreation, a position he has held since January. He was hired by West Des Moines in May 2018 as the department’s superintendent of recreation. Penning worked for Ankeny’s parks and recreation for nearly 12 years before joining West Des Moines’ city staff. He received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Northern Iowa in leisure, youth and human services.

In his current role, Penning serves as a manager over the activities at the MidAmerican Energy Company RecPlex and the city’s recreation divisions.

Sally Ortgies, West Des Moines’ current director of parks and recreation, will retire on March 31. She has served in a variety of roles in the department for the past 34 years. She became the department’s director in 2016.

Penning’s annual salary will be $160,000 when he becomes parks and recreation director in April.
