Perry sanitation company to layoff 76 workers
A company that sanitizes and cleans the Tyson Fresh Meats plant in Perry is closing, laying off 76 workers in late June, according to a notice posted this week on Iowa’s Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification, or WARN, website. The closure of Packers Sanitation Services Inc., also known as PSSI, coincides with Tyson’s plans to shutter the pork processing plant on June 28, a move that will result in the loss of 1,276 jobs. In 2023, PSSI was fined $1.5 million by the U.S. Department of Labor for employing over 100 underage children, some as young as 13, to work overnight shifts in meat processing plants in eight states. Iowa was not among the states where PSSI was found to violate federal child labor laws.
