Their goal: enable pharmacists across the country to better assist their customers in managing the cost and effectiveness of their prescription medications.

Now, their Des Moines-based company, Outcomes Pharmaceutical Health Care, serves more than 2 million consumers nationwide who are covered by one of its medication therapy management plans. Halterman recently presented a check for $333,444 to the IPA to repay a start-up advance the association made to his company.

“Repayment of this note has been a goal of our organization since its inception,” Halterman said. “IPA entrusted us with significant dollars and we are pleased to be in a position to fulfill our obligation to the profession and pharmacists of Iowa.”

Outcomes’ mission of providing medication therapy management, which focuses on pharmacists serving in a consultative role with patients, represents the future of the pharmaceutical profession, said Tom Temple, the IPA’s executive vice president and chief executive officer.

“The pharmacists of Iowa had the vision to invest in and create medication therapy management systems early on, and today that vision has been rewarded,” Temple said.
