Polk City voters to decide fate of pool, sports fields

Polk City voters will decide Tuesday whether the city will borrow $8.6 million to construct an aquatic center, 13 soccer fields and six ball diamonds. The bond referendum requires 60 percent approval to pass.

The project would establish a new recreation area in northern Polk City expected to cater to young families, and broader plans call for linking the Neal Smith Trail with the High Trestle Trail. A road extension would promote development near the pool complex.

Taxes on a $250,000 home would rise by about $41 a month. The $11 million project would include donations, grants and in-kind services in addition to the city bond proceeds.

Knapp Properties is prepared to donate 28.5 acres worth $570,000 for the aquatic center and soccer fields near Polk City’s technology park, in return for the city’s commitment to extend Vista Lake Road through the area, at an estimated cost of up to $3 million.
