From our “Elbert Files” columnist Dave Elbert: “Tuesday, March 6, will be a historic day for Des Moines. It’s when residents of the city, rural Polk County and nine contiguous suburbs — Altoona, Bondurant, Clive, Grimes, Johnston, Pleasant Hill, Urbandale, West Des Moines and Windsor Heights — vote on adopting a 1-cent, local-option sales tax that is expected to generate $79 million annually, including $37 million for Des Moines.”

From Managing Editor Perry Beeman (Insider): “Community leaders Bob Mahaffey, Mary Chapman, Joe Gonzales and Christine Hensley said in a joint interview that they are seeing what appears to be significant support for ‘Public Measure A,’ which would bump up the local sales tax by 1 percentage point to help pay bills for local governments.”
