123 wordsAg and Environment, All Latest NewsThe Iowa Pork Producers Association is teaming with the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship to offer funding for hog farmers interested in technologies that can reduce pollution related to their operations. The association has provided $25,000 for grants that will help offset up to half the costs to install saturated buffers or bioreactors on farms. Preference will be given to sites that provide the greatest opportunity for nitrate reduction, and the money will be spread across the state to improve education on the techniques. Bioreactors are pits with wood chips that help break down pollution as water runs through. The buffers are used to take water from underground drainage systems, using natural processes to remove pollutants. Applications are available here.
