Poultry industry recommends tactics to protect against bird flu
The National Chicken Council on Tuesday recommended nine biosecurity measures, saying they are the poultry industry’s first line of defense against all avian diseases, including bird flu. Bird flu killed 34 million chickens and turkeys in Iowa this year and was detected in 15 states. Mike Brown, president of the council, recommended to broiler farmers measures such as avoiding sharing farm equipment; ensuring that all people have disinfected or new footwear before entering a house or facility; and adequate training of farmers and farm and company personnel in biosecurity and disease prevention, reports DesMoinesRegister.com.
