That question may be on the minds of many financial professionals now that the Pension Protection Act has opened the door for them to provide investment advice to retirement plan participants. Principal Financial Group Inc. has produced a white paper on the subject to help them sort out the nuances of the new law.

The paper, titled “Pension Protection Act of 2006: Is an Expanded Fiduciary Role the Right Choice for Financial Professionals?” has received a third-party endorsement from two legal experts specializing in employee benefits law. “Regrettably, the new rules are complex, and in some cases, difficult to implement,” said Fred Reish, managing partner of Reish Luftman Reicher & Cohen P.C., a Los Angeles law firm, who reviewed Principal’s paper. “This white paper highlights many of the issues financial professionals should consider when deciding to offer investment advice to participants.”
