Des Moines Register: The U.S. Department of Agriculture will offer federal assistance to Iowa farmers and other U.S. producers who had to destroy hogs, turkeys and chickens they were unable to get processed during last year’s COVID-19-related supply-chain disruptions. The department in Tuesday’s announcement said it will provide aid equaling 80% of the cost of each animal destroyed and the cost to dispose of it. The agency expects that, at roughly $260 for each hog that weighed over 450 pounds and nearly $5 for a laying hen, plus 30 cents for each chick, the total will amount to about $300 million.
