The department in Tuesday’s announcement said it will provide aid equaling 80% of the cost of each animal destroyed and the cost to dispose of it. The agency expects that, at roughly $260 for each hog that weighed over 450 pounds and nearly $5 for a laying hen, plus 30 cents for each chick, the total will amount to about $300 million.
