BACKGROUND AND UPDATE: Permits were issued in May by the city of West Des Moines for the demolition of buildings on the site where West Bank plans to construct its new headquarters.
The bank bought the property in January, paying $4 million for parcels that had included a vacant restaurant building, a strip shopping center and a brewery. A building occupied by Bank of America will remain on the site until the end of the bank’s lease, which is in about nine years.
Demolition and cleanup of the site is expected to be completed by the end of June, according to Matt Brown, president of Formation Group, which is overseeing the development of the project.
“Our construction team has repurposed the former Covid testing site as a job office and site grading will begin immediately after demolition,” Brown wrote in an email. “We are on track to have full building permits by mid-August.”
West Bank is West Des Moines’ oldest business. The bank’s headquarters currently is located in an office building at 1601 22nd St. in West Des Moines that it has leased since 1972.
