Public interview process for next state Supreme Court justice is set

The State Judicial Nominating Commission will meet Jan. 30 to begin winnowing applications to fill a vacancy that occurred when Justice Daryl Hecht retired Dec. 13. Nineteen Iowans have applied for the job. The public interview process will occur in the Iowa Supreme Court chambers on the fourth floor of the Judicial Branch Building. An interview schedule will be posted on the Iowa Judicial Nominating Commissions websiteThe interviews will be livestreamed and the videos archived on the Iowa Judicial Branch YouTube channelImmediately following the interviews, the commission will begin deliberations to select a slate of three nominees from the group of applicants. Once the commission selects its slate of nominees, it will forward those names to Gov. Kim Reynolds, who will have 30 days to appoint the new justice. Applications and, in some instances, prior interviews are posted on the commission’s website.
