Readers make their cultural wish for Des Moines
Turns out Greater Des Moines residents have a lot more than 30 ideas for raising the bar on culture here.
In last week’s Business Record we published an article in which we asked a group of local culture leaders, as well as Business Record readers, what events, attractions and venues were on their wish lists. The result was a list of 30 wishes.
We wanted to keep the list going. This week, we asked Business Record Daily readers to share with us their wishes for additions to Des Moines’ arts and culture scene. Using #30WishesDM, readers submitted their ideas via Facebook and Twitter.
Here is a sampling of the ideas we received this week:
“A shift from a car-centric transportation culture to one that gives people options: walking, biking, transit.” – Des Moines Bicycle Collective
“An urban park with multiple features like that in Washington Park in Cincinnati, which includes a dog park, gazebo, interactive musical fountain (you can program the music), a green, and even has an underground parking ramp.”
– Susan Judkins Josten
“I’d love to see interactive art installations.” – Jenna Ekstrom
“My wish is for a ‘Please Touch Museum’ for kids like in Philadelphia.”
– Brianne Fitzgerald
“Somehow restructure the river and waterway in downtown Des Moines to allow all types of boats to create a cool downtown riverfront scene that includes restaurants that you can dock to, bars, nightlife, shopping and attractions (like Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., waterways).” – Katherine Harrington
“More giving gardens to benefit low-income families!” – Kelsey Tyrell
“More bike paths!” – Katie Roth
“We need an Ethiopian restaurant, like Dukem on U Street in DC.”
– Holly Olson
“Portland-style streetcar system through downtown Des Moines and East Village.” – Tony Filippini
