Iowa has seen a record number of registered voters this election cycle, Secretary of State Paul Pate said today in a news release. According to the release, the state had 2,095,581 active registered voters as of this morning. The previous high was 2,045,864 in January 2017, according to Kevin Hall, a spokesman with the secretary of state’s office. In the release, Pate said that Iowa is one of the top 10 states in the country for voter registration and participation, and that he is happy to see so many people engaged in the process ahead of Tuesday’s general election. More than 90% of Iowa’s eligible population is registered to vote, he said. As of today, registered Republicans narrowly outnumber registered Democrats, 719,591 to 699,001. There are 659,488 people registered as no party, and more than 17,500 registered as “other.” The secretary of state’s office also announced that as of this morning, 1,036,409 requests for absentee ballots had been received for Tuesday’s election, with nearly 956,000 of those being received by county auditors.
