A lack of markets for recycled paper sent the material collected in the Des Moines area to the landfill for four months, the Des Moines Register reported. Mick Barry of Mid America Recycling told the Register that about 20 tons of paper from curbside recycling pickups were buried with other trash. “That’s where the markets have deteriorated to,” he said. Des Moines Public Works Director Jonathan Gano said the program will continue, and the city plans a fee increase to cover some of the losses. Recycling is important in part because most of the time, where there is a market for the material, the program saves space in the landfill, he added.
