Red Bull brings Soapbox Race to Des Moines
Red Bull has announced it is bringing its Soapbox Race to Des Moines on Saturday, June 18. According to a news release, the Red Bull Soapbox Race is described as one of the world’s wildest downhill races. Since it was introduced in Brussels in 2000, more than 100 Red Bull Soapbox events have been held around the world. This will be the first time it has come to Iowa. The race is a competition where amateur teams navigate their homemade carts through a downhill course filled with obstacles to see who can complete the course the fastest. Teams are judged on one-third speed, one-third creativity, and one-third showmanship. The application phase to compete in this year’s race opened today. The deadline is March 18. As many as 50 teams will be chosen to participate. Applying to participate in Red Bull Soapbox Iowa is free, but applicants must be 18 years or older to enter. The Des Moines course will run the length of East Walnut Street, alongside the Capitol Complex, from East 12th Street to East Seventh Street. More event details, including the panel of celebrity judges, will be announced closer to the race date. Viewing for the public is free.
