The YMCA of Greater Des Moines is looking for another contractor for construction of its new facility in Waukee.
Regency Commercial Services was scheduled to take the lead in the project, which involves relocating the Y’s Waukee operation to a new building on about 10 acres of land north of U.S. Highway 6 and west of North Warrior Lane.
The new building would be about 73,812 square feet and would fit into a larger development called Greenway Park that has been proposed by Ladco Development Inc.
With the Waukee City Council granting a rezoning for the larger development, the YMCA was ready to break ground at their new location, said Vernon Delpesce, president and CEO of the YMCA of Greater Des Moines.
“With Regency uncertain about their future, we just have to let things sort out at this point,” Delpesce said.
The YMCA hopes to line up another builder soon and break ground in another 30 to 60 days, he said.
“In these types of projects, no matter how hard you work on it, they never seem to go as planned,” Delpesce said.
