The expansion would provide an additional BSL-3 (Biosafety Level 3) lab at the facility on the University of Iowa’s Oakdale Campus in Coralville. The University of Iowa had requested permission from the Board of Regents to proceed with the expansion after the State Hygienic Lab had secured a time-sensitive federal grant from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that would fully fund the expansion. RDG Planning & Design in Des Moines was selected by the university as the design firm for the project.
