Restored ‘Apollo and Venus’ painting to be unveiled at Hoyt Sherman
A restoration of Des Moines’ earliest Old Master painting, Otto van Veen’s “Apollo and Venus,” will be unveiled Jan. 24 at Hoyt Sherman Place, the museum announced. The restoration of the 400-year-old painting, which was rediscovered in a storage room of the mansion in 2012, culminates an “Adopt a Painting” conservation program that was launched that year. To date, 53 paintings from the Des Moines Women’s Club collection have been conserved by Chicago painting conservator Barry Bauman, including works by Thomas Moran, George Inness and Edwin Lord Weeks. Robert Baldwin will discuss his research on “Apollo and Venus” and the painting’s underlying themes to mark its permanent installation in the Hoyt Sherman Place Art Gallery on Jan. 24 at 6 p.m., followed by a reception. The program is free and open to the public.
