“We’ve wanted to move to Des Moines for years,” she said. “But the kids were little and everything just wasn’t in place.”

The shop, called ReStyle, was originally established 14 years ago in Newton, then moved to Marshalltown nine years ago. But now, Recinos has finally opened the store she always wanted, in the Sherwood Forest shopping center in Windsor Heights.

ReStyle sells baby furniture, toys and name-brand clothing for children, juniors and women. Recinos said she accepts only clothes in very good condition, in season, and no older than two years. She is currently accepting clothes for fall and winter. All items are sold on consignment, and new consignors must make an appointment.

“We are not a thrift store,” she said. “We sell name-brand clothing in really good condition. For it to be in our store, it has to be in style and look like new.”

Recinos got the idea for the store after she and her family moved back to the United States from Guatemala. She met her husband there as a volunteer for the Peace Corps, and while they lived in Guatemala, the couple had three sons. When they moved back to the United States, Recinos found out she was pregnant with her daughter. The couple quickly realized the things they needed, such as baby furniture and clothes, were not cheap, and most pre-owned stores didn’t sell things in good condition.

“So, the idea started to open our own place to do just that,” she said.

The new store officially opened in Windsor Heights Aug. 1, and Recinos said she is excited that many of her customers and consignors from Marshalltown and Newton have already visited the store.

“We’re lucky to have some very loyal customers,” she said.

The store sells goods on consignment, meaning the seller gets paid after the item is bought. Recinos said her loyal consignors made opening much easier, as it would have been difficult to get the word out right away, and thus, would have been difficult to have a lot of merchandise.

Recinos said she tries to focus on quality with every aspect of the store, from the merchandise it carries to the displays.

“We work really hard to make sure everything looks nice,” she said. “That is something we take a lot of pride in.”

Currently, her husband, Francis, and daughter, Sofia, are helping her at the store, but Recinos said she is looking to hire more help, both part time and full time.
