Reynolds: Japan pact key to Iowa trade

Gov. Kim Reynolds praised Japan’s approval of a new trade agreement negotiated by the Trump administration and Japanese leaders. “Japan is not only a substantial economic power, but a key export market for Iowa beef, pork and corn,” Reynolds said. “This agreement bolsters exports, provides much-needed relief and stability to Iowa’s ag sector, and places even greater pressure on China.” The pact with Japan removes or reduces tariffs on 90% of U.S. food and other agricultural exports to Japan. In 2018, Iowa companies exported $1.5 billion in goods to Japan, where Reynolds led a trade mission earlier this year. As a next step, Reynolds urged Congress to approve another key piece of legislation for Iowa products, the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement. Earlier this year, Reynolds led a 24-member trade mission delegation to Japan.
