The program aims to educate Iowa’s residents on the importance of clean waterways, create cleaner rivers, and organize for legislative action on issues related to water trails, water quality, dam mitigation and removal, and river restoration. Service Squad will host eight river cleanups each year and feature partnerships with organizations on clean water programming. Participants will learn to create and preserve clean river sites and support clean water through individual action. They will also be offered advocacy training and opportunities to engage in direct action for environmental advocacy at the state Capitol. The program is funded by the American Rescue Plan Act and supported by Polk County and over 20 other local nonprofits and government entities.
