Many companies showed strong growth this year, but they also struggled to hire, especially in technology fields, Robert Half Technology reported.

The employment company surveyed chief information officers and information technology executives throughout the year. Some highlights:
  • Skills in highest demand included Windows administration, desktop support, network administration and wireless network management.
  • Wearables in the workplace:  Eighty-one percent of CIOs said they believe wearables will be a common workplace tool.
  • Security: To improve security, 54 percent want to beef up employee training, 45 percent want to vet consulting firms more closely and 45 percent plan to hire more security pros.
  • A top industry: Seventy-five percent of professionals working in non-information technology fields said they find an IT career appealing based on salary potential, career opportunities and the ability to innovate.
  • Salaries are going up: Starting salaries in IT are predicted to increase 5.3 percent next year. Pay for wireless networking engineers is expected to rise 9.7 percent.
