Sales tax holiday

Iowa residents saved more than $877,000 in state and local sales taxes last year during the annual sales tax holiday, which this year will be Aug. 3-4.

Now in its 14th year, the event is held the first Friday and Saturday of August. Retailers that are open on those days are required to participate by not charging sales tax on eligible clothing and footwear items that are priced under $100. Though the event was designed to provide a break to families on their back-to-school shopping, the exemptions apply to clothing and shoes for adults as well.

Here’s a snapshot of exempt sales for the past five years, as reported by retailers to the Iowa Department of Revenue and a sample of some of the items that are exempt and others that aren’t.
