The $12.3 million school will hold 600 to 650 students, kindergarten through fifth grade, when it is completed in 2008.

“The groundwork was finished last month and construction crews are laying in the plumbing now,” said Steve Drake, executive director of support services for the Ankeny Community School District.

The nearest subdivision to the school is Ashland Meadows. But Drake said Ashland will not be part of the school’s name. For the next two to four months, the school will remain nameless.

“The school board has never had a policy for naming schools, but Ankeny is growing so fast, it’s probably time we had one,” Drake said. “The board will spend the next two to four months putting together the policy.”

Ankeny is keeping pace with its growing student population in other ways, too. Drake said “87 brand-new teachers” completed their orientation in Ankeny this week.
