British scientists are developing gene-edited chickens designed to be resistant to flu in hopes of protecting flocks and preventing the spread of the deadly virus to humans, Successful Farming reported. The University of Edinburgh in Scotland expects the first altered chicks to hatch later this year. The gene editing technology CRISPR is behind the work, removing parts of a protein that the flu virus uses. Iowa is one of the nation’s top producers of eggs and has many commercial chicken operations.
