September overall a good month for Iowa stocks

Fourteen of 20 Iowa-based companies posted stock price gains for the month of September. Six companies posted losses. 

Five companies posted double-digit percentage gains. The top three were Renewable Energy Group Inc. with a 23.34% gain, Winnebago Industries Inc. with a 19.77% gain and Lee Enterprises Inc. with a 14.61% gain.

The six companies that were down in September were KemPharm Inc., Meredith Corp., Workiva Inc., Casey’s General Stores Inc., Flexsteel Industries Inc. and NewLink Genetics Corp.

EMC Insurance Group Inc. announced on Sept. 18 that shareholders voted to approve taking the company private. EMC was removed from our Iowa Index when it became private at the end of trading on Sept. 19. Read more about EMC going private.

Of note, NewLink Genetics Corp. announced on Sept. 30 that it had entered an agreement to merge with Texas-based Lumos Pharma. Read more about the merger.

The Iowa Index, an unweighted average price of 20 Iowa-based public companies, increased by 1.95% from July and was down 14.66% on a year-over-year basis. 

By comparison, the Dow Jones industrial average gained 1.95% during the month and increased 1.73% from a year ago. The Nasdaq composite gained 0.46% during the month and decreased 0.58% from a year ago
