The Healthiest State Initiative has named the western Iowa town of Odebolt winner of the 2019 Set the Pace challenge. By having the highest percentage of its residents participating in the Grand Blue Mile in Des Moines, Odebolt will receive $10,000 to use on a community project to promote safe and accessible places to be active, such as a park, playground or trail. In all, more than 40 communities — a 24% increase from 2018 — and thousands of individual participants accepted this year’s challenge. “It’s remarkable to witness record engagement for the Set the Pace Challenge as part of Grand Blue Mile’s 10th anniversary,” said Chris Verlengia, Wellmark’s senior brand marketing manager and Grand Blue Mile official.
