Iowa Insurance Commissioner Nick Gerhart announced today that a total of seven companies have applied to offer Iowans health insurance through the federal health insurance marketplace in 2016. Just two of the companies will offer individual coverage statewide through the online marketplace — Coventry Health Care of Iowa Inc. and Medica Health Plans, a Minnesota-based company that announced Thursday it’s entering the Iowa market to offer plans both on and off the public exchange. United Healthcare of the Midlands has applied to sell its individual plans in at least 76 counties. United Healthcare Insurance Co. will be the only carrier selling small-group plans statewide on the marketplace. Click here to see a table of the health plans and their coverage areas. Policyholders may only receive federal subsidies by purchasing plans that are offered on the public exchange.
