At the request of businesses and early birds who want to use the Wellmark YMCA, the city of Des Moines Urban Design Review Board will consider extending the hours the downtown skywalk system is open by 90 minutes, from 4:30 a.m. to 2 a.m. The skywalk currently opens at 6 a.m. and closes the next day at 2 a.m. “Many members of the YMCA that live downtown would like to be able to use the skywalk to access the YMCA in the early morning hours,” according to a staff report. The city’s Skywalk Association recommended the new hours during its December meeting.
