Southwest Airlines Co. announced today that it will transition its AirTran Airways operations at Des Moines International Airport to the Southwest brand beginning Sept. 30.

Southwest will operate two daily round-trip flights between Des Moines and Chicago Midway Airport.

AirTran was acquired by Southwest last year. Des Moines is one of 22 AirTran markets not currently served by Southwest where Southwest will take over AirTran operations.

Southwest announced in January that it would provide service out of Des Moines. Officials say having a low-cost carrier in the form of Southwest should bring airfares down across the board in Des Moines.
