The Iowa Soybean Association board has voted to add $150,000 to the $65,000 it previously provided three counties sued by Des Moines Water Works over nitrate pollution. Sac, Buena Vista and Calhoun counties contend they are immune from federal regulations the utility says should apply to drainage ditches. The association will provide “noncheckoff farmer membership funds” to the legal defense fund for the counties. “It’s a case the counties and its residents can’t lose,” said association President Wayne Fredericks of Osage. “We don’t want to look back and say we could have done more.”
