An idea for a poem came to Emily Sernaker after an incident that occurred while she was walking down the street in a big city. A man knocked into her, hard. In response, she heard herself apologize. After that, she heard it all the time. In response to that, Sernaker wrote the poem to express her wish that women speak up without feeling the need to dismiss themselves.
